Advancement in Treatment of Hives

Hives, also known as urticaria, is a skin rash consisting of red, raised, itchy bumps. Some hives are the result of an allergic trigger that usually disappear within days; however, some people experience hives for months to years unrelated to an allergic trigger.

Oral antihistamines are the preferred choice of treatment for hives. When antihistamines cannot control hives, treatment can consist of medications to suppress the immune system such as certain chemotherapy drugs and antimalarial medications.

At last, we have something else to offer those who continue to suffer from hives with no underlying cause. After successfully treating severe asthma for a number of years, this medication (Xolair) has been approved to treat hives. With a high success rate (85%), this medication has dramatically improved symptoms in a matter of days to weeks. While not a permanent cure, the benefits of one injection usually lasts for a month. If you experience uncontrolled hives for greater than six weeks after treatment with antihistamines, come in to find out more about this great treatment.
